Number of administrative entities 2008

Just like last year, DOPA has now published the numbers of administrative entities as of December 31 2008. The one page PDF gives the following numbers:
  • Central administration
    • Provinces (changwat, จังหวัด): 75
    • Districts (amphoe, อำเภอ): 877
    • Subdistricts (tambon, ตำบล): 7,255
    • Villages (muban, หมู่บ้าน): 74,944
  • Local Administration
    • Provincial administration organizations (PAO, องค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัด): 75
    • Cities (thesaban nakhon, เทศบาลนคร): 23
    • Towns (thesaban mueang, เทศบาลเมือง): 140
    • Subdistrict municipalities (thesaban tambon, เทศบาลตำบล): 1,468
    • Subdistrict (Tambon) administration organizations (TAO or SAO, องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบล): 6,145
  • Special administrative entities: 2 (Bangkok and Pattaya)
The population number was already announced earlier as 62,828,706 citizen - 31,007,857 men and 31,820,849 women.

In the central administration there was no change at all, not even new administrative village. The only changes were with the municipalities, 140 instead of 129 towns, 1,468 instead of 1,124 subdistrict municipalities, and 6,145 instead of 6,500 TAO.

While the above numbers don't hide anything interesting I have missed so far, I tried Google a bit and found the same document for July 2006, and that showed there were 509 villages created in 2006 and 2007 - but I only have Royal Gazette announcements for 482. Don't know if the missing ones were not published, were wrongly indexed and therefore not found by my searches, or I made any mistakes working through those many PDFs.

Finding data about Thailand and administrative areas in Thailand is not easy. I'm sure that finding the data and keeping it up-to-date must keep you very busy. I really appreciate the work you have done for us, and have added a link to you from the Bangkok Library website. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the review and the link on your site. I will definitely link you back whenever I mention a library or bookstore in Bangkok, your site is very promising.

You are right, I have spent a lot of time into this already. Luckily I am now up-to-date with my data (except for the muban where it seem to have no full authoritative list), and the only changes currently are upgrades of TAO to thesaban.

I have one question. On this data, there is no mention about King Amphoe (minor districts). I read in one document they had been all qualified to Amphoe. But I could not find this info somewhere else.

Do you confirm this info? Are they no more King Amphoe in Thailand, but only Amphoe?

Thanks for you help and all your great job. It's amazing all the good data you collected on administrative areas... Well done and Thanks.

Exactly, all of the King Amphoe were upgraded to full Amphoe effective August 24 2007 - even though many did not qualify by the normal rules for the upgrade yet. See the announcement in Royal Gazette.
